The current state of export quality management and infrastructure is a key concern. Nepalese exporter are facing difficulties in proving compliance to buyer requirements, due to inadequate testing and certification bodies.
The report recommends strengthening Nepal’s quality and customs infrastructure, better engagement with India for transit and trade facilitation, and enhancing the export production capacity of small businesses. Background
ITC in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce of Nepal implemented a large-scale survey of Nepalese companies to identify the non-tariff measures and procedural obstacles hindering Nepalese exports.
The ITC business survey interviewed 577 Nepalese firms on their experiences with non-tariff measures (NTMs). The survey covered:
- Active exporters and importers
- Logistics service providers
- Producers of NTIS priority sectors
The survey allows the public and private sectors to better understand the current business environment and identifies actions to promote the development of Nepalese firms and export competitiveness.
ITC and the Ministry jointly organized stakeholder meetings in 2016 to present the survey results and initiate discussion on necessary actions to alleviate the problems due to NTMs. Recommendations presented in this report are based on consultations with relevant stakeholders and experts.
The NTM Business survey also provided inputs to Sector Export Strategies of tea, coffee, large cardamoms and handmade paper being developed by ITC for the Government of Nepal.Downloads
